An interesting detail
Many readers initially think Olivia Foxworth is the true villain. However, later books suggest that much of Olivia’s bitterness and harshness developed after years of living under Malcolm’s influence and abuse. After a brief pause as she listens to the person on the other end, her tone shifts entirely to shock and devastation, and she gasps out her final line of the scene:
"Oh, no... Oh, my God, no!"
She then drops the phone receiver in horror as it dangles from the wall cord, and the scene immediately cuts to the father's funeral, transitioning the family into their tragedy.
