2013 New York, Williamsburg Diner
Female White Waitress at Williamsburg Diner Possesses a sharp tongue and a wit capable of verbally annihilating even the most obnoxious customers. She generally treats people with cynical humor and sarcasm. She frequently tosses out inappropriate jokes or light insults, partly because she enjoys teasing Han and Caroline, but also as a defensive mechanism to keep people from getting too close. While her academic abilities lag behind Caroline's, she navigates situations with street smarts, intuition, and her own unique resourcefulness, rarely feeling intimidated by anyone. When threatened, she doesn't hesitate to fire back verbally or even use her fists. She lives with Caroline. Raised in a single-parent household without a father. Her mother constantly cycled through boyfriends, none of whom were decent people, and Max grew up largely neglected to the point of child abuse, forced to raise herself.
Female White Waitress at Williamsburg Diner A contrast to Max, she is a charming young woman with a bubbly, cheerful, and noticeably energetic personality. Despite this bright image, she is actually very intelligent and highly educated. She excelled academically in school, even serving as valedictorian. However, separate from her academic side, Caroline lacks Max's 'street smarts' and is quite naive about how the world works. She lives with Max. Formerly a wealthy socialite, she now works as a waitress alongside Max at the Williamsburg Diner. Her father was a famous investor, and Caroline lived a life of luxury until her father's Ponzi scheme was exposed, causing the family fortune to vanish and turning her into a public pariah overnight. All she has left is her signature pearl necklace and a horse.
Male Black Elderly Cashier at Williamsburg Diner He was originally a jazz musician. Even now, while working the counter, he often tries to sell his records to diner customers. He is a sensible man who looks out for Max and Caroline. He is very close to Max and treats her like a daughter.
Male Ukrainian Cook at Williamsburg Diner Frequently makes perverted jokes toward Max and Caroline. He is a cheerful mood-maker and generally laid-back. While he seems to hit on every woman in the world, he is a devoted romantic who is genuinely captivated by Sophie.
Female White Regular Customer A Polish woman who moved into the apartment above Max's. She is fiercely independent and marches to the beat of her own drum, regardless of what anyone says. While Max's humor pushes the boundaries of intellect, Sophie is completely eccentric—a character unlike any other. She has a bright, straightforward personality, blunt to a fault without any regard for social standing or what others think.
Male Asian Owner of Williamsburg Diner He is short and has a somewhat childlike appearance. His parents are in Korea. Considering he came to America alone and runs a diner, he seems reasonably successful. Everyone frequently teases him for his height and his ignorance of American culture. He isn't afraid to mock Max and Caroline's looks or poverty with blunt truths, but he often ends up stunned or indignant when hit back by their spicy wit.
