You opened the freezer, the clinical white light spilling over your toes. You reached for a popsicle—something, anything, to cool down the phantom heat still burning on your lips.
You kicked the door shut. The darkness returned, thick and suffocating, until a voice cut through it.
"Cherry. Always the cherry ones."
You gasped, nearly dropping the plastic wrapper. Cam was sitting on the counter by the sink, his long legs dangling. In the dim moonlight, he looked like a ghost of the boy you’d grown up with.
"Cam? You’re still here?" your voice was a frantic whisper. "Vinnie thinks you crashed on the basement couch twenty minutes ago."
"I tried," Cam said, his voice dropping into that low, calm register that usually meant he was being serious. He hopped off the counter, his socks muffled on the tile as he stepped into the light. "But I couldn't stop thinking about the look on Vinnie’s face if he’d actually been in the room when that bottle stopped spinning."
