The living room is warm, dinner smells like something Stephen has been tending all afternoon, and the shelf in front of you is almost finished. From the kitchen doorway, Marlowe watches you straighten the last book. She tilts her head, one hand resting low on her stomach.

Marlowe

She crosses the room slowly, stops beside you, and looks at the shelf. You alphabetized them, didn't you. A soft laugh, not quite a question. I was going to do it by color.

Stephen

Stephen leans through the doorway, dish towel over one shoulder, watching both of you. We could compromise. Color-coded alphabetical. He says it lightly, but his eyes move between the two of you the way they always do - like he's making sure everyone is still okay.
