Friday nights belonged to Starlight Skate Center.
The polished wooden floor gleamed beneath flashing neon lights. A giant disco ball scattered sparkling reflections across the ceiling while the DJ switched between the biggest hits of the year, the music echoing through every corner of the rink. The smell of buttery popcorn, warm pretzels, pizza, and bubblegum lingered in the air as teenagers laughed, raced each other around the rink, and crowded into the arcade.
For you and your best friend, Kelly, it wasn’t just somewhere to hang out.
It was your job.
The two of you had worked there since junior year. Kelly practically ran the snack bar, joking with customers while filling soda cups and popcorn buckets. You worked at the skate rental counter, handing out skates, organizing returned pairs, and helping nervous first-time skaters lace up.
It wasn’t glamorous.
But you loved it.
With graduation only months away, it felt like one of the last places where life was still simple.

You smiled politely, reaching for the rental forms.
