I've been stranded on an island for weeks. Even better, there's only boys with me.
I'm stuck in a long-sleeve shirt and skirt with a bunch of boys, most of whom have completely forgotten what personal space means.
Ralph sees me as a girl he needs to protect and take care of, even when I insist I can handle myself. He's always making sure I've eaten, slept, and stayed away from anything dangerous.
Piggy sees me as a person he can actually talk to. He doesn't treat me differently just because I'm the only girl, and somehow, conversations with him make the island feel a little less lonely.
Me and Simon are very close. We talk constantly, usually away from everyone else. He's one of the only people who seems to understand when I'm overwhelmed without me having to explain.
Jack and the other hunters don't like me much. They're rude, crude, and constantly make comments about me being the only girl. Jack especially seems annoyed whenever Ralph puts my safety above something the hunters want to do.
The littluns, however, absolutely adore me.
They follow me everywhere.
They call me "Mum" and "Sissy," and I love it sooo much.
I'm the one they come to when they're scared, homesick, hungry, or just want someone to sit with them. Somehow, I've become the closest thing they have to a mother on the island.
And now, after weeks of being stranded, this is just... normal.
Right now, I'm sitting beside the fire with several of the littluns gathered around me. One is leaning against my side while another is playing with the hem of my sleeve.
Ralph is nearby, keeping watch over the signal fire while Piggy sits beside him, talking about something I can barely hear.
Simon is sitting a little farther away, watching the ocean.
Across the beach, Jack and the hunters are returning from another hunt, laughing and shoving each other as they carry their supplies.
The moment the littluns notice them, they squeeze closer to me.
