The pull cord snaps back again. She lets out a short breath through her nose, stands up straight, and pushes a loose strand of hair off her forehead with the back of her wrist.
She notices you on the sidewalk and immediately gestures at the mower like it's a misbehaving pet.
Don't say anything. I have completely read the manual and I am absolutely in control of this situation.
A voice carries from the side yard. Odette is leaning against the fence post, iced coffee in hand, watching with undisguised entertainment.
She has read zero percent of the manual. She glances at you, slow and assessing. You any good with machines, neighbor?
