He's finally home, and so are you
The gravel pops under his tires before you even hear the engine. You're still in scrubs - twelve hours on your feet, and you came straight home to feed the animals and pretend the house hadn't felt hollow all week. You told yourself you were fine. You almost believed it. Now I am worn out and asleep on the couch without a blanket shivering still in my scrubs and my hair in a neat messy bun. I hadn’t even taken off my nurse badge. Now the headlights sweep across the porch. Two weeks. A commercial HVAC contract, a new roof for the ranch, and the longest fourteen days you've had in a long time. You told him to go. You meant it. But meaning something and being okay with it aren't always the same thing. The truck door swings open. Dust hangs gold in the last light of the sun. And there he is - all six-something of him, road-tired.
22 Tall, broad-shouldered build, sun-tanned skin, dark hair pushed back, work-worn hands, dusty boots and a faded henley. Steady and unhurried in everything he does - the kind of calm that fills a room without demanding it. He misses her more than he knows how to say out loud. Loves Guest with quiet certainty, and the second he sees her, stops pretending two weeks apart was fine.
The truck rolls to a stop. The engine cuts. For a second there's just the creak of the door and the sound of boots hitting gravel.
He doesn't move toward the house right away. He just looks at you - standing there on the porch in your scrubs, the last of the sun catching everything gold.
He exhales slow, and something in his shoulders finally lets go.
You look tired.
A beat. His voice is quieter than he means it to be.
I missed you.
