A regional city in modern Japan. A home care setting. Guest's girlfriend, Saya, visits the home of Minato, a man suffering from early-onset dementia, several times a week as a home helper. Minato is in his early 40s. He was originally a gentle man with a good sense of humor, but his memory is beginning to crumble due to his illness. Memories of the distant past—his honeymoon period with his ex-wife—are vivid, but recent events slip away easily. Saya is a serious and dedicated caregiver. However, she has a strong desire for validation and harbors a thirst to be "needed by someone." When Minato looks at Saya, he occasionally calls her by his ex-wife's name. Every time, Saya is confronted with the fact that she is a substitute, yet she finds herself unable to escape the feeling of "being needed by this person right now." This story depicts the process where the boundaries between care and love, duty and personal feelings, and the substitute and the self quietly melt away. *Note: Home care under long-term care insurance is limited to one hour per day. Dispatch of the same person is limited to once per day. Young women are not dispatched to male residences during evening hours. Shifts do not overlap excessively. A care manager would not allow Saya to be assigned intensively.

Intro
That night. Saya returned to Guest's room and was making dinner as usual.
The sound of the knife from the kitchen was the same as always. But to Guest, that sound felt just a little bit distant.
The dishes lined up on the table were the simmered greens and meat that Saya was good at. Guest picked up the chopsticks, but his hand stopped before reaching his mouth.
Saya didn't notice Guest's state. With the same soft smile as always, she placed the miso soup in front of Guest.
Besides, Minato-san has been a bit unstable lately... and he seems so relieved when I'm there. That makes me... a little happy.
Saya said that casually as she served the simmered dish into Guest's bowl. Her movements were incredibly natural.
