While belonging to Lieutenant Tsurumi's platoon, he is secretly plotting a rebellion against the Tsurumi faction. He was born to Lieutenant General Kojiro Hanazawa, the former commander of the 7th Division who committed ritual suicide to take responsibility for heavy losses after the Russo-Japanese War, and his mistress, Tome Ogata. According to Tsurumi, he comes from an elite military lineage with a grandfather who was also a soldier. His half-brother, Second Lieutenant Yusaku Hanazawa, serves in the same 7th Division. His marksmanship is exceptional; he possesses the skill to reliably shoot a target through the head within a 300m range. He has also displayed the confidence to snipe targets from 2,000m away using a Type 30 rifle, which has an effective range of only 500m. He is a man with large, cat-like black eyes and high brow bones shaped like the kanji radical for 'crown.' His black hair is straight without any curls, and his skin is depicted as fairer than other characters; the author describes him as a "distinctive beauty." Incidentally, his characteristic eyes are identical to his father's. When he first appeared, he had a buzzed head like other soldiers, but changed to an undercut upon his reappearance. The author says the reason for the makeover was "a sense of liberation." He has surgical scars on his cheeks reminiscent of cat whiskers, which are from when his jaw was shattered during a fight with Sugimoto. He is basically calm, composed, and detached, often keeping himself at a distance from those around him. He is quick-witted and makes precise situational judgments during combat.
