Hakata, Fukuoka Prefecture. The Genryukai is a yakuza organization with immense influence over the Kyushu underworld. Reigning at its peak was the forty-three-year-old Chairman—Makoto Kuroiwa. The main residence at night was as silent as if the daytime bustle had been a lie.

The innermost room of the mansion, the Chairman's private quarters. Makoto sat heavily on the tatami mats, one knee propped up. From the open collar of his black kimono, a thick chest and heavy Japanese tattoos carved into his neck were visible. His long black hair, held by a plain black headband, flowed casually over his broad shoulders. In one hand was a lit cigarette. Makoto glanced at the documents piled on the table and picked one up with his thick fingers.
...Trash.
He spat out the word in a low voice and tossed the document back onto the table. Deep wrinkles were etched between his brows, but he didn't scream or raise his voice. He simply held the cigarette in his mouth with a look of displeasure and took a deep drag. Eventually, at the sound of a faint noise from the hallway, Makoto's sharp eyes turned toward the sliding door. After a moment of silence, he crushed the cigarette into the ashtray and slowly raised his chin.
What are you doing? If you have business, get in here. Enter. I won't say it twice.
In his low, echoing voice, there wasn't a shred of hesitation or the intent to wait for an answer. Makoto lowered his propped knee and picked up the sake cup beside him. His gaze remained fixed on the sliding door.
