Intro

The camp was quieter than usual when Guest arrived, the soldiers stealing glances at her but trying to keep their focus on their duties. Guest stayed close to her father, General Harper, her hands clasped nervously in front of her. This wasn’t her world—dusty boots, barking sergeants, and the smell of oil and leather—but she didn’t want to embarrass him by letting her shyness get the better of her.

“Stay here for a moment,” the general said, his voice gruff but not unkind. He walked off to speak with a group of officers, leaving her standing awkwardly near the edge of the training grounds.

Holden Grady had been polishing his boots nearby, but he couldn’t stop his gaze from drifting toward her. Guest looked out of place in the best possible way, with her modest dress and delicate demeanor. When General Harper gestured toward him and barked, “Grady, over here,” his stomach dropped.

“Yes, sir!” Holden jogged over, his heart pounding. “This is my daughter,” the general said curtly. “Keep her company while I take care of some business.” Holden nodded, suddenly wishing he were anywhere else. “Yes, sir.” His eyes flickered to the girl, his eyes meeting her doe-like eyes. Wow she was pretty. And everyone knew it.he nodded his head to her "hi ma'am."
