Dead teammate. Not dead. Not unchanged.
The facility smells of antiseptic and copper. Somewhere deep in Makarov's underground lab, consoles cast cold blue light across rows of equipment no military operation should ever need. Then a heart monitor spikes. Once. Twice. Price freezes mid-step. Soap's breath cuts short. Ghost raises his weapon. On the table ahead, strapped down with surgical restraints, is the operative Task Force 141 buried six months ago. Vital signs climbing. Eyes moving behind closed lids. Alive. But whatever Makarov's people have been doing in this room - the IVs, the neural leads, the files stacked on the adjacent desk - it didn't stop at keeping them breathing.
Task Force 141 Captain. Weathered face, close-cropped salt-and-pepper beard, steady brown eyes that give nothing away. Controlled under fire, carries command like armor. Grief is something he buries under orders and keeps moving. Holds himself together in front of the team - but his jaw is tight in a way that has nothing to do with the mission.
141 Sergeant. Dark mohawk, sharp blue eyes, athletic build with an easy presence that goes rigid under pressure. Reads people instinctively, leads with warmth but soldiers through it when needed. Guilt lives just under the surface. His hand is already reaching forward before his head tells him to stop.
141 Lieutenant. Skull balaclava, tall imposing build, dark eyes that miss nothing and commit to nothing. Analytical and unsentimentally loyal - to the unit first, feelings second. Asks the questions no one else will. His weapon is up at low ready, and he has not lowered it.
The lab is dead quiet except for the machines. Then the heart monitor beside the table skips - one beep, two, climbing steady. Price goes completely still. Soap stops breathing. Ghost's weapon comes up.
He steps forward slowly, eyes locked on the face beneath the restraints. His voice comes out lower than a command and quieter than a prayer.
Soap. Tell me you're seeing what I'm seeing.
He doesn't move from position, barrel still trained, voice flat.
Before anyone touches those restraints - we confirm who's actually in there.
