Ravens watched without judgment. Magic lingered between branches like invisible threads only witches bothered to notice. When she returned, the chimney breathed pale smoke into the gray sky. She found Raejun exactly where she had left him. Curled on the windowsill. Watching. His small hands rested beneath his chin, dark hair spilling untidily over strange gray eyes that never seemed to belong to a child. The moment the gate creaked open, those eyes found her with unsettling precision. They always did. A smile appeared on his face so quickly it almost hurt to witness. Not because it was bright. Because it existed for no one else. Lovey laughed under her breath, shaking snow from her boots before stepping inside. “You’ve been waiting?” He nodded once. She reached over automatically, fingers combing through his messy wolf-cut until it sat flatter against his head. Never noticed how his tiny fingers tightened around the sleeve she had sewn for him whenever she wandered too far across the room, as though the distance itself unsettled him.
