The end of a 12-year relationship. I have nothing left.
It's been a full 12 years since we first met back in our school days. Throughout that long time, I loved everything about you. Your laughter, your irritability, your sadness, even your exhausted face... The seasons we spent together piled up and became familiarity, and before I knew it, you had become my daily life itself. We came to know each other too well. What you would say, what expression you would make... even predicting what lies you might tell. Perhaps that kind of predictable love is what wore me down. When did it start? My heart stopped aching when you cried, and it stopped racing when you smiled. I just found you bothersome, and because I was so used to you, I made pathetic excuses. But those excuses soon turned into certainty. Just as I was getting tired and bored of you, a high school classmate contacted me. Lured out by the simple suggestion of having a drink for old times' sake, I met her. Unlike you, who stays at home without makeup in messy clothes, she was all dressed up and captivated me. I knew I shouldn't think this way... but she looked so beautiful. In a drunken blur—truly, I was wasted—we shared a few kisses, and it made my daily life race again. After kissing another woman, it became so hard to look at your face. At first, even looking at you felt disgusting and I felt so guilty, but that guilt soon turned into shamelessness. I brushed it off, thinking, "It happened because of the alcohol, it's already done." As long as I kept it from you, it was fine. As I grew more neglectful and spent more time with the other woman than with you, you cried and got angry at me. Honestly, did I feel sorry? I don't think I did. Instead, I just got angry in return, and the word 'excitement' didn't even suit you anymore. The reason I didn't break up with you while seeing another woman was because you were my life... I thought it would be too hard if we actually split up. Or perhaps, I didn't love you, but only the time I spent with you?
Today, I left you at home again to enjoy a date with another woman, carrying an excitement I can no longer feel with you. Throughout the date, I wonder what kind of face you would make if you knew... Would you hit me and angrily break up with me? I see your face overlapping with the other woman's and imagine rather filthy things. Like thinking of that woman as you when I hold her... At first, guilt made me feel disgusted even looking at you, but lately, I don't think much of it.
On the way home after the secret date, my phone pings. It's probably another text from you. I open it, and as expected, it's you. You're asking when I'm coming home, saying it's late and that you're worried. It's just annoying, so I switch the phone to silent and head home slowly.
As soon as I arrive, I see you running to the entrance in a loose t-shirt with your hair messily tied up, and my brow furrows. These days, everything you do irritates me... To keep my temper in check, I just ignore you and walk into the room, leaving your bewildered figure behind.
I keep seeing the other woman's face overlapping with yours. In the past, guilt would make disgust rise to the back of my throat just by looking at your face, but these days, I don't feel much of anything.
It was just a one-time mistake because you don't dress up and I feel like you don't see me as a man anymore. When I look at you now, I don't feel the old excitement; you just look pathetic. Everything you do is just pathetic.
I've truly grown tired of you now. Finally, I'm the one to speak up nonchalantly, saying, "Let's stop this." You seemed to have expected it to some extent, but you looked up at me for a moment as if you couldn't believe it. Tears began to well up in your eyes as you stared at me. I didn't want to see you sobbing again, so I ended up shaking off your hand as you tried to hold onto me, packed my bags, and walked out.
Until that moment, I believed it was the right choice. I told myself the boredom was over and the love was over too. A few days have passed since the breakup. Days went by as if nothing had happened. Eating, sleeping, going to work—it was the same routine as before.
Then I suddenly realized I couldn't feel anything. A morning with only one cup of coffee on the table instead of two. A phone that doesn't ring all day. An unkempt room... Above all, your tone, expressions, and habits that suddenly pop up won't leave my head. No matter how much I smoke or drink, those traces won't fade. I gradually fell apart. Everything became a chore, I spent many days just lying on the sofa, and the thought of you became increasingly painful. Only then did I realize that this world without you is much colder and emptier than I thought.
I only now think about wanting to go back, but it's already too late to return.
