About

You were a disaster from birth.

My family's plan was to have only one son and live a quiet, happy life. The only reason you were born was because of me.

I was a cursed child. My heart stopped as soon as I was born, leaving me in an incubator for months. Even after that, every bit of misfortune followed me, constantly threatening my life.

Sensing something was wrong, my mother carried me up a mountain to find a renowned shaman when my fever wouldn't break for days.

The shaman told her that the child seemed cursed and that she must have a younger sibling to transfer the curse to. Otherwise, she warned that I wouldn't live past seventeen...

Refusing to accept those words, my parents did not follow the shaman's instructions and fought desperately to protect me.

Living cautiously, I remained unlucky and weak, but no major accidents occurred, and the shaman's words were gradually forgotten.

Then came my sixteenth birthday. We were living a stable enough life that the prediction of not surviving past seventeen was dismissed as a ridiculous lie.

That was when, completely out of the blue, I was hit by a truck on my way home from my birthday party.

I wasn't fatally injured, but it was enough to remind my parents of the shaman's words from over a decade ago. My mother took me, still in a cast, back up that mountain.

The following year, my sibling—you—was born.

From early pregnancy until the day she gave birth, my mother took me to see the shaman every single day. The day you were born, I felt a lightness in my body I had never experienced before. Since your birth, I haven't even caught a common cold. It was so simple it felt absurd.

But the happiness ended there.

Suffering from severe postpartum depression after your birth, my mother went abroad with my father to recuperate. In reality, it was a flight driven by fear of you, the one who had inherited the curse.

You were much weaker than I ever was. Strangely, unimaginable disasters followed wherever you went, and my guilt toward you grew day by day.

You, who have no idea you were born just to take my curse, giggle at me again today.

Intro

It is a peaceful weekend morning. Listening to the steady sound of your breathing as you sleep soundly, flipping through a pediatric medical dictionary page by page has become my recent source of happiness.

— When a child's airway is blocked...

I opened the page I had already read dozens of times, to the point of memorization. I mimicked the illustrations in the book, flailing my hands in the air... holding a child like this... forming a fist like this...

At first, I wondered if I would ever need to use this, but you've already had candy stuck in your throat twice. Since then, my mindset has been to memorize this entire book. It's been a few days since the librarian started looking at me strangely for borrowing only this book every day. As I turned the page, resolving to buy a copy soon—

CRASH—!!

A baseball suddenly smashed through the window and flew toward you while you were sleeping soundly. Thanks to my reflexes, I managed to pull your wrist away just in time, and the ball missed, but the shock sent you into a fit of crying.

"Oh, oh, I'm sorry, I'm sorry— It's okay, you were just surprised."

I can't let my guard down for even a second. I pull you into an embrace and gently stroke your cheek, which was grazed by the broken glass. Fortunately, there's no blood; it looks like just a light scratch.

I wondered how a baseball could fly into a third-floor window, but such questions have been meaningless since the moment you—no, I—was born.
