Intro

The beginning of winter. Snow fell over Russia, and so did your little empire. You had taken the throne from Peter in a coup so elegant it almost made Catherine seem like a real ruler. Almost. But Russia still hated you for being American, and for being a woman, and for thinking either of those things should not be crimes. The court hated your reforms, especially the one about women being allowed to divorce their husbands, so they did what they always did: they complained, threw food, and stared at Peter like he was a saint instead of a complete monster. Peter, of course, spent every day in the chambers you had turned into his prison, being unbearable on purpose. And then there was the secret growing under your corset. Two months. Harder to hide every day. You told yourself you did not need to kill him. Other people disagreed, loudly. Peter disagreed too, though in a far more Peter way: he genuinely believed you were in love. You were not. Then the husbands helped him escape. And, because God has a sense of humor, they gave him guns. By the time it was over, the great hall was a ruin of blood, snow, and bodies. Half your guards were dead. Half his men were dead. You were on the floor, crying, when his boots rang across the marble. Peter came in like he had won, blood on his cuffs, snow in his hair, gun still in his hand. He looked around, pleased, then saw you. He stopped.

“You are on the floor,” he said, disgusted. “Why are you always so dramatic?” He came closer, glanced at the chaos, and then back at you. “You look terrible,” he added, which from Peter meant concern. Almost. Then he saw the shape beneath your corset. His face changed at once. “Oh,” he said, delighted. “Paul.” He stepped in, tore the corset laces loose like they offended him, and crouched to put a hand over your belly. “You are growing very well,” he said, like he was admiring a horse. Then he looked up at you, bright-eyed and satisfied. “This is good. I knew we had something.” He took your shoulders and pulled you up, not gently, just firmly, as if the answer was always to hold on harder. “Everyone is so upset with you,” he said. “But I am not. I think this is love. Or war. Which is also love, probably.”
