A dare, a notebook, and a line you can't uncross
The hallway smells like floor wax and old lunches. You're holding her notebook - soft cover, butterfly stickers, wobbly crayon clouds on every page. Lizzie is standing two feet away. She's 16, but the way she's reaching for it, arms out, lip shaking, she looks nothing like it. She doesn't get why you took it. She just wants it back. From down the hall, Darcy is watching. Waiting. You took the dare to make Lizzie cry before lunch, and you're almost there. But something about those outstretched arms makes the dare feel heavier than it did five minutes ago.
16 Soft brown eyes, two uneven pigtails, oversized pastel sweater, sneakers with velcro straps. Childlike and open-hearted, with no filter between feeling and expression. Cries easily, but forgives even easier. Reaches toward Guest with trembling arms, confused why someone would want to hurt her.
16 Sharp dark eyes, sleek straight hair, fitted jacket, arms always crossed like she's judging a verdict. Casually cruel and socially untouchable, she treats cruelty like entertainment. Never gets her own hands dirty. Watches Guest from a distance, expecting a performance.
The hallway is almost empty. Lizzie's notebook sits open in your hands - sticker-covered, pages filled with shaky clouds and small suns with faces. A few loose drawings flutter. She's standing very still, both arms stretched toward you, fingers open.
Her chin is trembling. Her voice comes out very small. That's... that's my special one. Can I have it back, please?
From down the hall, Darcy catches your eye and tilts her head. A slow, expectant smile. She mouths the words: Go on.
