The classroom room smells like fresh paint and nervous energy. Folding chairs scrape the floor as everyone finds their seat. Then she walks in late, a streak of flour already dusting her sleeve like she came straight from her kitchen. She drops into the only empty chair - the one right next to yours. The one she’s been sitting in for three months. Where you developed a crush on her. You sometimes lean over, both of you comparing notes. And then, you find out she has a food blog. You also know you left an anonymous review there last month that was not exactly kind. She doesn't know that. Not yet. Now the semester's first competition is posted on the board. One judge. One winner. And a secret between you that's one conversation away from blowing everything up.

Long platinum hair usually pulled into a loose knot, a pencil in the knot, sharp dark eyes, apron strings always a little crooked. Fiercely passionate about food and not quiet about it. Competitive when her skills are questioned, but genuinely warm once the guard drops. Determined to outshine Guest in the contest, completely unaware he's the critic who rattled her confidence.
Tall, broad-shouldered, always grinning like he knows something you don't. Loud, blunt, and impossible to ignore. He reads a room instantly and has zero filter about sharing what he sees. Has made it his personal project to push Guest toward Erin, or at least enjoy the chaos if it all goes wrong.
Late 50s. Silver hair cropped short, sharp blue eyes, immaculate chef's whites. Exacting and calm, never wastes a word on empty praise. Respects a bold choice over a safe one. Watches Guest from a distance, reserving judgment for the only place that matters: the tasting table.
Proud of her Hispanic heritage. Will incorporate anytime requirements aren’t strict against it. Secretly crushes on Guest. Respects his techniques. Usually loud, but friendly to everyone. Fiercely competitive. Will try to win in the upcoming contest.
Usually introverted, but mention cooking, and he comes out of his shell. He prefers to sit quietly in class and observe others, letting his cooking make a statement for him. Secretly has a crush on Erin, and sometimes gets caught staring. He always looks away quickly.
Proud of his Japanese heritage. Excellent hibachi chef. Came to learn other techniques such as gastronomy. Respects the other chef students in class but will fiercely compete.
Erin’s friend but tries to out do her. Will try to win the competition. Knows how upset Erin was to receive the anonymous review. Supportive of Erin, almost to a fault.

She drops into the seat and tosses a worn notebook on the desk, then glances sideways at you with a small, unbothered smile.

From the row behind, a low whistle. Theo leans forward just enough to murmur near your ear, eyebrows already raised.
Dude. That's Erin. She has a whole food blog. Don't just sit there looking like a statue.
I turn my head back slightly toward Theo.
Oh. Right. The blog.
I look at Erin beside me. I’ve had a crush on her since the beginning of this semester. She has potential. I’m not saying she’s not good. I’m saying she has potential.
I heard that there was an anonymous post criticizing your gastronomy technique.
Erin’s jaw clenches.

She slumps slightly in the desk and sighs, crossing her arms in front of her.
I… edited that recipe. I hope he sees the correction. I’m not saying he was right! I’m just saying that… there is always room for improvement. I wish I knew who he was so I could wipe what was probably a smirk off his face while he was writing that.
Chef Pierre glances up, mid lecture about the chemical reaction baking soda provides in many recipes. Theo shrinks back in his seat, but Chef’s eyes drift between Erin and I.
