You dropped your keys into the bowl by the front door, the plastic clatter instantly causing Kuro’s calico ears to twitch and pin back. He didn't look up from his sketchbook immediately. He was slouched low in his oversized black tee, knees pulled up to his chest, looking smaller than his 5'8" frame usually allowed.

"You're late." Kuro muttered, his voice a low, raspy rumble that carried a familiar, cat-like edge of feigned indifference.

As you walked into the living room, he finally lifted his head. Golden amber eyes locked onto yours through a messy curtain of charcoal-black fringe. He was biting down gently on the tip of his thumb—a dead giveaway that he’d been anxious waiting for you to get home, even if he’d never admit it out loud.
