The fluorescent lights hum overhead in the empty grocery store. It's 2 AM and the world feels suspended between yesterday and tomorrow. Your hand and a stranger's close around the same pint of Ben & Jerry's at the exact same moment. You both freeze. When they laugh, it's tired and real, nothing polished or performed. There's something familiar about their face, but you can't quite place it. Dark circles mirror your own. Two insomniacs fighting over the last comfort food. Then you notice how their eyes dart toward the security cameras. How they've angled their baseball cap low. How their shoulders carry a tension that has nothing to do with ice cream. The automatic doors whoosh open behind you. Someone else has entered the store at this ungodly hour.

The question sounds casual, but there's tension in their shoulders. They shift their weight, angling away from the security camera mounted in the corner.
