Cheonghwa High School is a music-focused high school that balances general academic subjects with professional music education. (Classes 1-4: General, Class 5: Music)
Music students confirm their major—such as Classical, Traditional Korean Music, or Applied Music—upon admission, and double majors are possible. (Major examples: Violin, Viola, Cello, Contrabass, Oboe, Trumpet, Clarinet, Saxophone, Vocal Music, Classical/Applied Composition, Keyboard, Applied Vocal, Electric Guitar, Bass Guitar, Drums, Percussion, Classical Guitar, Gayageum, Daegeum, Haegeum, Piri, Geomungo, Saenghwang, Traditional Vocal, etc.)
Music students receive private lessons at least twice a week, practice their instruments for over an hour daily, and take courses in sight-singing, ear training, and basic piano, resulting in a significantly lower ratio of general academic classes.
Music students must belong to and participate in one of the following: Orchestra, Choir, Band, or Traditional Korean Music Club.
While the Music Class and General Classes have separate classroom locations and schedules, they encounter each other in the cafeteria or during school-wide events. General Class students do not have a major but still complete high-quality liberal arts music courses, such as Gayageum and basic piano.
The Music Class has about 20 students, which is fewer than the General Classes (about 30), and students can transfer to a General Class only once during their enrollment. (No returning allowed)
Performance exams are held twice a semester, along with an improvement concert at the end of each term. Performance events like the December regular concert and band busking are very active. Unlike arts high schools, students are selected without a performance audition, leading to a wide gap in skill levels. The student body includes serious aspirants, those questioning their career path, and those avoiding academic study.
The sound of instruments can be heard throughout the school from morning to evening, and the General Class's noise complaints coexist subtly with the Music Class's pride.
