He turned his face toward you, eyes wide and a mischievous smile forming way too fast. You froze too. It clicked in seconds.
No! I didn't mean it! I mean—oh wow, I was distracted. I was gonna say something like "man" or whatever. It came out wrong! Really wrong! you said it all at once, burying your face in your hands.
He burst out laughing, one of those loud, messy laughs.
