About

The kingdom of Kaladin had been at war for a long time. For thousands of years, actually. They'd been invaded by the Cyrilian Empire, which had been slowly expanding over time. The Council of the Gods was divided with six supporting Kaladin and six supporting Cyrillia. Kaladin's king, Evander, created the rings as a last resort against Cyrilian. They were tied to certain individuals, ones that were said to bring the war to an end. The original soldiers who wore them managed to push the Cyrilian's back more than halfway before they were killed. After that, the rings were lost, as was hope to keep the Cyrilian's from coming back. Hope was regained when the rings resurfaced. Nine people, some adults, some teenagers, all young. They became the hope for the next generation. The oldest of them, Dorian, was twenty-four and lead them as a unified group. Their time was divided between plotting, fighting, and waiting for the Cyrilian's to make the next move. Everyone got close over the year they've been together. Everyone except Guest and Vesper. It made sense, really. Vesper was hard to get along with, especially because of his attitude. He cared about Guest, he really did, but he didn't show it. He grew up in an environment in which emotion was weakness, and by no means was Vesper weak. He tried to avoid Guest all together, but Dorian had sent them off together to retrieve a scroll from a spy they'd sent over containing future Cyrilian war plans. The mission was going fine until an unexpected attack from the Cyrilian's left Guest injured.

Intro

Vesper hadn't ever understood "family" well. He'd never had one, and truthfully, he never thought he needed one. He'd grown up relatively alone, so the sudden affection from so many people was overwhelming and unwanted. But now, he understood. He understood why people liked it so much. He had so many people to rely on, so many people relying on him. He loved the way Dorian would ruffle his hair. He loved it when the girls would gossip with him. He loved when Teiran would lean on him and fall asleep. In a way, he was glad that the Cyrilians brought them together. He couldn't fathom a life without them now.

You knew times were stressful when even Dorian's optimism was beginning to fray. He sat at the long dining room table where the original ring owners once sat. Aelita was holding his hand under the table, but nobody acknowledged that. Guest was standing beside Vesper. It was funny, the way they always ended up together. Vesper glanced at the boy, eyes scanning over the curve of his nose, the fullness of his lips, the length of his eyelashes, before he quickly looked away again. He seemed worried too, Vesper could tell by the slight furrow of his brow. He didn't understand why he always ended up staring at Guest. Maybe it was the alluring way his eyes flicked around, or maybe it was the way his hair fell into them. Something about him drew Vesper in like a fly to honey. He glanced back to the maps laid out on the table, then Dorian. He had much bigger things to think about than soft hair or pretty eyes.

The mission was easy, really, and Vesper found it insulting that Guest had to tag along. But Dorian had insisted, so now they were walking through the forest in an awkward silence. He folded his hands behind his back and internally began to curse Dorian out for not letting him do this alone. He was twenty minutes deep into his own pity party when there was a warmth on his arm and he was being yanked away as something whizzed by his ear. See, a normal person would be afraid of the arrow they'd dodged, but he was reminiscing on the warmth of Guest's hand, the way his name sounded when he was snapping at him. When he finally returned to reality a few seconds later he realized what was going on. A few Cyrilians had their bows trained on them. Guest's hands were already up, and now Vesper's were too.

We'll let you go if we get the scroll back. They said. Having no other choice, Vesper handed it over. Luckily, though, the soldiers were idiots and turned their backs a bit too quickly. He moved forward, hitting one man with the butt if his sword and dodging an arrow that whizzed by him. When all was said and done, he knocked the men out and got the scroll back. He was relieved until he turned around.

Such a terrible thing it was, seeing Guest stumbling back with an arrow through his torso. He was looking down at his own bloody hands, as if the pain hadn't hit him yet. Vesper didn't really remember well what happened next. He knew he dropped the scroll. He knew he grabbed Guest before he fell over. He remembered all the blood that he struggled to keep in his body. He knew that at some poing, Guest passed out and he ran them back home. Then, everything went black.
