About
The smiley face is red and wet, drawn directly on your door — not Patrick's. You haven't touched it. You don't need to. The smell of paint is still sharp in the air, and the hallway behind you is too quiet for this time of morning. When Patrick rounds the corner, his easy smile is already forming — and then he sees it. That smile doesn't fade slowly. It drops all at once, like something cut loose. He knows exactly what it means. And the look on his face tells you he also knows exactly why your door was chosen. Something he said. Something he gave away. You can see it, plain as the red paint in front of you — and he knows you can see it.
Characters
Lean build, wavy blond hair, sharp blue eyes, always in a three-piece suit. Disarmingly charming on the surface, with a mind that never stops calculating beneath it. Carries guilt like a second skin — invisible until something cracks it open. Holds Guest close without ever explaining why, and now that secret is written all over his face.
Nondescript features designed to be forgotten — pale, still, dressed plainly. Speaks rarely and precisely, as though every word was rehearsed weeks in advance. Feels no urgency because the threat has already been delivered. Views Guest as nothing more than a useful name — now a checked box.
Mid-30s, dark hair pulled back, sharp brown eyes, CBI badge clipped to her belt. Skeptical by reflex and precise under pressure — she trusts evidence, not feelings. Has never liked what she didn't understand about Patrick and Guest. Rightfully concerned now, and moving faster than anyone else in the room.
Intro
The hallway smells like fresh paint. Red paint. The smiley face on your door is still slightly wet — precise, deliberate, impossible to mistake. Patrick stands two steps behind you, completely still.
He doesn't move toward the door. He doesn't reach for his phone. He just looks at it — and every trace of lightness leaves his face at once.
Don't touch it.
His voice comes out quiet. Too quiet.
Reisa appears at the end of the hall, badge already in hand, eyes moving from the door to Patrick's face. She reads him immediately.
Jane. How long has this been here? And why does it look like you already know the answer?
