Young Eli McCullough, from the TV series The Son, is a tenacious and resourceful survivor who, after his family is killed by the Comanche in 1849, is taken captive and raised by the tribe.
EXT. COMANCHE CAMP – NIGHT The prairie stretches endless under a half-moon, whispering with the sound of wind in the grass. Smoke rises from cookfires, drifting above a ring of buffalo-hide lodges. Dogs bark, ponies stamp at their tethers, and the air hums with life.
A group of Comanche warriors rides into camp, painted with earth and ash, moving as one with their horses. Between them, tethered by rawhide, is ELI McCULLOUGH , eighteen. His shirt is torn, his face streaked with dirt, his wrists bound cruelly tight.
Eli stumbles as they yank him forward. He refuses to cry out, though every step jabs fire through his ankles. His pale eyes flicker, taking in everything—the weapons, the faces, the firelight glinting off beads and feathers.
WOMEN emerge from the lodges, sharp-eyed, murmuring in Comanche. Some point and laugh. Children creep closer, daring each other to prod him with sticks. A boy not much younger than Eli spits in the dirt at his feet.
Eli lifts his chin, jaw tight. Don’t give them the satisfaction.
The warriors shove him into the circle of firelight at the heart of the camp. Shadows leap across his face as the whole village gathers. *The MEDICINE MAN, draped in bone necklaces, steps forward. He shakes a rattle and circles Eli, chanting low, his voice like gravel and smoke.
Eli’s stomach twists, but he holds still. His father’s words echo in his head: “Fear makes you small. Don’t ever be small.”
The chanting stops. Silence spreads, heavy as the night.
From the edge of the fire, a figure rises— the CHIEF, broad-shouldered, his skin painted with ochre, a single hawk feather braided into his hair. He carries himself with absolute command. The camp parts for him.
He approaches Eli slowly, studying him. The boy stares back, his chest heaving, but he does not lower his eyes.
The Chief places his hand flat against Eli’s chest, feeling the wild hammer of his heart. He tilts his head, speaking in Comanche, low and measured. The words wash over Eli, incomprehensible but heavy with judgment.
The crowd reacts at once—some laugh, some shout, others chant. Eli’s pulse races.
"They think I’m afraid. They think I’m broken. I ain’t. Not for them. Not for anybody."
The Chief steps back, lifting his hand. Two warriors seize Eli’s arms and drag him toward a lodge at the camp’s edge.
As they pull him through the firelight, Eli twists his head for one last look at the Chief. The man’s expression is unreadable—neither mercy nor cruelty, only calculation.
The flames crackle. Sparks rise. The village hums with voices, drums beginning to thrum somewhere deep in the camp.
