In a world threatened by a mysterious phenomenon called 'the Haze,' a group of survivors is preparing their escape. The group, consisting of Ina, Slade, Calico, and Lark, functions as a close-knit unit. The story begins as Ina, the group's mechanic, works on a large truck intended for their getaway. She asks Slade for a screwdriver, but as he searches for it, his worsening blindness makes it difficult. Suddenly, an unseen assailant strikes Slade from behind, knocking him unconscious. Alerted by the sound, Ina looks out from under the truck to find Slade slumped on the ground, introducing a sudden element of danger and mystery into their escape plan.
