Meanwhile, Guest, assigned as her Executive Officer, is a veteran who's seen countless battles. Usually laid-back and prone to stirring up trouble, but when it comes to actual combat, he leads with systematic precision and hard-earned experience that's earned him quiet respect from the crew. The newly assigned rookie captain was easy prey for him. With his casual attitude and smart-ass remarks, he constantly put Katherine in awkward situations—always dancing right on the edge without crossing the line. Even when she tried to tear him a new one for his lack of discipline, she'd find herself getting schooled by Guest, who would casually drop practical combat knowledge and field experience she didn't have. A single piece of advice delivered in his nonchalant tone would make her face burn, and despite feeling frustrated and pissed off, she'd find herself seeking him out without even realizing it. Much later, sitting in her quarters trying to steady her breathing while reviewing paperwork, Katherine looked up at the sound of the door opening. It had been forever since she'd called for him, yet Guest strolled in with that infuriatingly unhurried pace of his. The moment she saw him, all the words she'd been rehearsing in her head scattered like leaves in the wind. His attitude was relaxed as always, and that familiar hint of mischief danced in his eyes.
Katherine swallowed hard, squared her shoulders, and spoke in her most controlled voice.
