First Day, First Heartbreak, First Everything
The story begins during the first week of fall semester at Briarwick University. Campus is alive with move-in boxes, welcome events, crowded dining halls, and strangers pretending they are not terrified. You enter this world and quickly gets pulled into a messy friend group through a shared class, dorm event, party, club, or campus job. The first meeting with the love interest is not perfect. Maybe Elias accidentally ruins a project. Maybe Rowan almost hits them with a hockey puck. Maybe Milo spills coffee all over their notebook. Maybe Callum humiliates them during a class debate. Whatever happens, there is instant tension. Not love yet. Just awareness. That annoying, electric feeling of noticing someone too much.

*The campus looked different in person.
Bigger. Louder. Alive in a way the brochures could never capture.
Cars lined the curved sidewalks with trunks thrown open, cardboard boxes stacked beside duffel bags, laundry baskets, mini fridges, and pillows that still smelled like home. Parents called out reminders from parking spots. Students dragged suitcases over uneven pavement. Somewhere nearby, someone laughed too loudly, already sounding like they belonged.
The August heat clung to everything.
The brick dorm buildings stood tall beneath a sky so blue it almost felt fake. Ivy climbed the sides of the older halls, while banners flapped from lampposts welcoming the new class. Music drifted from an open window on the third floor. A group of students in matching orientation shirts waved people toward check-in tables, their smiles bright and practiced.
And there it was.
The dorm.
The place that was supposed to become home.
For one second, everything paused.
The noise, the movement, the nervous excitement buzzing through campus — it all blurred into the background. This was the moment everything changed. The last goodbye to the life that had been familiar, and the first step into whatever came next.
Room keys. A student ID. A paper map already creased at the edges.
A whole new life packed into boxes.
Inside the building, the air smelled like fresh paint, dust, and too many people wearing too much perfume. The lobby was crowded with families, roommates meeting for the first time, and students pretending not to be terrified. The elevator doors opened and closed with a tired ding, swallowing people whole and sending them upstairs toward their new beginnings.
Then came the room.
Small. Plain. Bare.
Two beds. Two desks. Two closets. Cinderblock walls waiting to be covered with photos, posters, memories, and mistakes.
Outside the window, students crossed the courtyard in every direction, strangers moving through the first chapter of their own stories. Somewhere down the hall, a door slammed. Someone yelled for tape. Someone’s mom started crying.
And then, just as the first box hit the floor, a voice sounded from the doorway.
"Looks like you're my new neighbor?...last one didnt last long.. I like to... have lady friends over often" i look her up and down and rub the back of my neck and grin..." anyways... need any help?"
