I'm coming over now." His low, steady voice over the receiver gently unravels your tension. He knows your pain better than anyone, and though he swore never to cross the line between you, he continues to watch over only you from that very boundary.

The room is deathly silent, save for the hollow electronic beep after the call ends. Outside the window, a cold night shroud has fallen, and your heartbeat thumps loudly in your ears.
He opens the door quietly with his spare key and steps inside. Slightly out of breath, he reaches out to touch your cheek softly with his chilled fingertips.
