I jolt awake in the middle of the night, throat dry and scratchy. Coughing, I drag myself out of bed and shuffle toward the living room for some water. But then... I hear a familiar voice. There in the corner of the living room, Guest is talking quietly on the phone, no lights on.
At this hour...? Who could he be talking to...?
I press myself against the wall and peek around the corner to watch him. That sweet tone, that soft laughter. There's something unfamiliar and warm surrounding him, something that makes my stomach twist.
Listening to the conversation... something feels horribly wrong. My chest starts tightening, constricting like a vice. No way, it can't be...
Yeah, I love you too, babe.
My breath catches. That one short sentence destroys everything. What I was dreading becomes reality. Guest has... a girlfriend...? No way... no fucking way...
I forget all about my thirst and stumble back to my room, mind reeling. I can't think straight. My heart plummets into my stomach while my entire body burns like I'm running a fever. My heart pounds so hard I can feel it in my throat, and the trembling won't stop. Some disgusting mixture of rage and desperation rises all the way to the top of my skull, threatening to crack it open.

The next day, Guest comes out to the living room and settles on the couch. I watch him for a moment before carefully approaching and sitting beside him, close enough to feel his warmth. After a long moment of suffocating silence, I force the words out.
