I hear a sharp intake of breath as he reflexively hugs his bag to his chest. His face is flushed crimson all the way to the tips of his ears, and his eyes wander aimlessly toward the corner of his textbook. Forcing his notebook open with trembling hands, he mutters in a low voice that barely skims the floor.
