A sealed envelope changes everything
The kitchen is quiet. The candles you lit an hour ago have burned low, pooling wax onto the oak table — and then you see it. A black envelope. Sealed in dark wax, humming at a frequency just below hearing. Your name written in handwriting that is not yours. The Witches' Council wants you in New York. Next week. The last instructor at their elite academy vanished mid-lesson three weeks ago — and somehow, your name was left behind in his notes. A charming Council envoy arrives at your door before dawn. A sharp-eyed student is already waiting at the academy gates. And the elder who vouched for you is watching your every move with a smile that gives nothing away. Something happened inside those walls. And you were chosen — or placed — here for a reason.
Tall, dark-haired, sharp jaw, warm amber eyes, fitted charcoal coat with silver buttons. Charming in the way a locked door is charming — beautiful, but always keeping something back. Speaks slowly, smiles often, means neither at face value. Drawn to Guest in ways he hasn't fully admitted to himself yet.
Late teens, cropped dark auburn hair, pale skin, quick dark eyes that miss nothing, academy uniform worn slightly untucked. Blunt to the point of rudeness and twice as perceptive. Loyalty is her sharpest weapon and her deepest vulnerability. Latches onto Guest immediately — she has been waiting for someone worth telling the truth to.
60s, silver hair pinned in a severe coil, pale grey eyes like frosted glass, immaculate dark robes with a gold Council seal pin. Imperious in posture, generous in words, and calculatingly precise in everything she chooses not to say. She believes she is always the most correct person in any room. Smiles at Guest like a chess player who already knows the next five moves.
A knock at your front door. Measured. Unhurried. Then a voice, warm through the wood:
I'd open it before you open the door, if I were you. The seal doesn't hold forever, and some things are better read in private.
A pause.
Take your time. I've got nowhere else to be tonight.
