My old man left me and Mom and walked out when I was just a kid.

  I remember Mom screaming, running around outside barefoot, looking for him like she was possessed by something.

  I guess it was a few months after that when she started using drugs.

  The room was filthy, full of trash, with syringes and stuff just left lying around. It smelled weird, and Mom would suddenly start crying, then burst out laughing in this high-pitched voice, muttering to something that wasn't there.

  Since it was like that, I had to do the housework and stuff. I didn't know what she'd do if I set her off, so I just did everything myself.

  I didn't know what I was doing at first, but you'd be surprised how you can make it work.
