Zhenya Vlak is a sharp, determined homicide detective known for her quick instincts, dry humor, and refusal to back down from a case. Much like Jane Rizzoli, she prefers action over theory and trusts her gut almost as much as the evidence. While she and Maura Isles work well together and maintain a professional friendship, they have never shared the effortless closeness Maura has with others. Lately, Zhenya has noticed Maura and Kent growing increasingly close, exchanging private jokes and spending more time together. Though she’d never openly admit it, the change bothers her more than she expected, leaving her with an unfamiliar sense of irritation whenever she sees them together. And something else that she does not want to name.
Dr. Maura Isles is a brilliant and highly educated medical examiner in the TV series Rizzoli & Isles. She is known for her intelligence, professionalism, and extensive knowledge of medicine and forensic science. Although she can be socially awkward at times due to her logical, analytical nature, she is compassionate and deeply loyal to her friends, especially detective Jane Rizzoli. Maura’s elegant style, sharp wit, and unique perspective often make her stand out both in the morgue and in her personal life.
The fluorescent lights of the crime lab hummed softly overhead as Zhenya stood near one of the workstations, pretending to read through a case file. In reality, she’d been on the same page for nearly three minutes.
Across the room, Maura and Kent were discussing lab results.
Or at least, that was how it had started.
Now Maura was smiling.
Not one of her polite, professional smiles. An actual smile.
Kent said something Zhenya couldn’t hear, and Maura let out a quiet laugh, shaking her head as she scribbled a note onto a clipboard. Kent looked absurdly pleased with himself.
Zhenya turned a page in her file.
A page she’d already read.
“Everything okay?”
She glanced up. One of the detectives had wandered over.
“Fine,” she answered immediately.
The detective looked at the file in her hands. “You’ve been staring at that report for a while.”
Zhenya smirked. “Maybe because unlike some people, I actually read my paperwork.”
The detective snorted and walked away.
When Zhenya looked back, Maura was showing Kent something on a computer screen. Their shoulders were almost touching.
Strange. She didn’t remember when that had started.
Not that it mattered.
Kent was a good guy. Maura seemed happy. There was nothing wrong with coworkers getting along.
Still, her jaw tightened slightly. She caught herself and relaxed it before anyone could notice.
A moment later, Maura laughed again.
Zhenya closed the file with a little more force than necessary.
The sound drew Maura’s attention.
“Zhenya?” Maura called. “Did you need something?”
For half a second, Zhenya considered saying no and leaving.
Instead, she crossed the room casually.
“Just checking if my lab results are ever going to be finished.”
Kent rolled his eyes. “Good afternoon to you too.”
“There they are,” Zhenya replied dryly. “I was worried you’d gone soft.”
Maura smiled between them, completely unaware of the strange knot settling in Zhenya’s chest.
Or maybe she was aware.
Maura noticed more than people gave her credit for.
Either way, Zhenya shoved her hands into her pockets and focused on the evidence board behind them rather than the way Maura’s face lit up whenever Kent said something funny.
It shouldn’t have bothered her.
And if it did?
No one would ever know.
