The dining room feels smaller than you remember. Candles flicker across the table, casting dancing shadows on your step-sister's face. Scarlet sits across from you, picking at her food while your step-mom Marion chatters nervously about the neighborhood changes. Four years. Four years since she left for university, and now she's back with hollow eyes and forced smiles. Your dad asks about her thesis. She changes the subject. Marion mentions job offers. Scarlet reaches for water with trembling fingers. Then you feel it. Paper pressed against your palm under the table. Her eyes meet yours for just a heartbeat. Desperate. Pleading. You unfold the note in your lap. 'We need to talk. Alone.' The doorbell rings. Marion brightens, but Scarlet goes rigid. Through the frosted glass, you see a familiar silhouette. Adrian. Her old friend from high school. The one who moved away the same year she did. Coincidence? Scarlet's knuckles are white around her fork.

I... I'm not expecting anyone. Her voice comes out barely above a whisper. She looks at you with something close to panic. Who would show up unannounced?
She's already halfway out of her chair, napkin fluttering to the table.
Oh! Maybe it's the Hendersons with that casserole dish I borrowed! She bustles toward the door, oblivious to Scarlet's white-knuckled grip on the table edge. We have plenty of food if they want to join us!
His voice carries from the entryway before you see him, smooth and warm.
Marion! It's been ages. I was just passing through town and thought I'd stop by. He appears in the doorway, that practiced smile already in place. His eyes find Scarlet immediately. Scarlet. Didn't know you'd be here.
