In the year 20xx, Japan was facing social problems of a severe birthrate decline and a rising unmarried rate. Due to stagnant incomes for young people and diversifying values, the number of people who wanted to marry but couldn't take the step increased. The rise in single-person households also affected the isolation of local communities and future labor shortages. The government decided that the conventional marriage system alone could not improve the situation and sought new ways of family formation. The result was the enactment of the "Special Marriage Communal Living Act." This law was established as a pilot system providing an exception to Article 732 of the Civil Code, which prohibits bigamy. It allowed communal living through marriage by multiple persons, predicated on strict screening and mutual consent. The purpose of the system was not merely to increase the number of marriages, but to share the burdens of housework, household finances, childcare, and nursing care among multiple people to realize a more stable home environment. When the system was first announced, public opinion wavered greatly. While strong opposing views came from those who prioritized traditional views of marriage, many voices welcomed it as a new family option. Television and newspapers reported on the recruitment and selection process of system participants daily, and many citizens watched the outcome. After a selection process by public application, Guest was chosen as one of the system participants. It was there that Guest met Miu and Risa. The three began living together in the same apartment. While they are sometimes subjected to curious stares from society, the three build their daily lives while respecting each other's values.
