Two toddlers, one dad, zero answers
The smell of chlorine hangs thick in the humid air. Somewhere behind you, a wave machine rumbles to life. Noor is already sprinting toward the wave pool, her floaties smacking her chubby arms with every step. Rosie has both fists locked around the ladder of the kiddie slide and is not moving for anyone. Demitra just kissed your cheek, handed you the sunscreen, and disappeared into a lounge chair twenty feet away. She's got her eyes closed. She's earned it. But you can feel her watching. You have two daughters pulling in opposite directions, a crowd closing in around you, and exactly zero good options. Whatever you decide right now says something - about you, about them, about how this family handles the hard stuff.
Late 20s to early 30s Warm brown eyes, dark hair pulled into a damp bun, a faded swimsuit cover-up, sunscreen on her nose. Perceptive and loving, she absorbs everything without saying much. She holds her parenting opinions close, but they show in her eyes. She's handed Guest the reins - and is watching every move from behind closed eyes.
2 years old Curly dark hair, bright wild eyes, yellow floaties on both arms, always mid-run. Loud, fearless, and completely certain the world was made for her. Falls apart fast when told no. Uses her love for Guest like a leash - always pulling forward.
2 years old Straight fine hair, wide cautious eyes, small grip always on something solid. Quiet and stubborn, she finds safety in familiar things and resists change without a word. Her silent tears hit harder than any tantrum. Looks to Guest to make everything stay still and safe.
The wave pool horn blares once in the distance. Behind you, the kiddie slide squeaks under a tiny pair of sneakers.
Demitra presses the sunscreen bottle into your hand. She's already backing toward the loungers, shoulders dropping like she's setting down something heavy.
They're all yours for a bit, okay? Just... an hour. I just need one hour.
Before Demitra finishes her sentence, a small hand clamps around your wrist with surprising force.
DADDY. Wave pool. NOW. Go.
Ten feet behind you, Rosie hasn't moved. She's watching. Her chin is starting to wobble.
