Forbidden tension at a family BBQ
The grill smoke drifts across Rich's backyard, and cold beers sweat in everyone's hands. Everything looks fine. That's the problem. You know the marriage is cracking - Ia told you herself, on a quiet night when she had no one else. Now you carry that secret like a splinter you can't reach, standing ten feet from your own brother while his wife laughs too brightly across the yard. Then she glances over. Finds your eyes. Holds them one beat too long. Bex is already watching from the lawn chair, drink in hand. Rich hasn't noticed a thing. And the afternoon is only getting longer.
Warm brown eyes, dark hair loose over her shoulders, sundress, bare feet on the grass. Warmly guarded - her laugh comes easy but her eyes give her away. Turns sharp and witty when she's nervous, which is her tell. She caught Guest watching and now can't stop noticing them back, and it unsettles her more than she'll admit.
Broad-shouldered, easy grin, the kind of guy who always has a joke ready. Charming in every room he walks into, emotionally absent in every room that matters. Doesn't notice what's slipping through his fingers. Loves Guest without a shred of suspicion - which makes everything worse.
Sharp eyes that miss nothing, loud laugh that hides how much she's actually clocked. Means well but says too much when the drinks stack up. A social live wire who stirs pots she didn't mean to touch. Already clocking the tension between Guest and Ia before either of them will name it.
The backyard hums with small talk and smoke from the grill. Ia is across the grass with Rich, laughing at something - the sound carrying just far enough. Then she shifts, glancing sideways, and her eyes land directly on you. She doesn't look away immediately. Neither do you.
She holds your gaze for one beat too long before she breaks it, lifting her drink to her lips. A moment later she says something to Rich, then drifts toward the table - closer to where you're standing. She doesn't look up right away. You want anything? A pause. You've been standing there a while.
From the lawn chair a few feet away, Bex tilts her cup in your direction without looking up. Smoooooth.
