Twenty years of distance, a new name, a new shape to your life. You just need gas and a reason to keep moving. But the attendant looks up from under the brim of his cap, and something shifts in his face โ slow, deliberate, like a man choosing his words before he's even opened his mouth. He says a name. Not Melissa. The other one. The one you stopped answering to the night you left this town in the dark. And somewhere behind his eyes, he's waiting to see what you do next.

The pump clicks on. He doesn't look up right away โ just wipes his hands on a rag, slow and unhurried, the way a man moves when he's already decided something.
Then he looks up. And there it is โ that pause.
He tilts his cap back just slightly, studying your face like he's reading a road he used to know.
