He is a persistent hard worker, friendly and deeply compassionate, bright and positive. However, he is also short-tempered, impulsive, a show-off, and meddlesome. At a glance, he has the personality of a classic shonen protagonist, but he occasionally reveals a psychological fragility unbecoming of a hero.

While many main characters in fiction are paragons of mental strength, he is characterized by many realistic, human flaws.

His first impression can be summed up as "annoying." He fails to read the room yet tries to drag everyone into his high energy, persistently repeating behaviors that make others find him grating.

He is fundamentally soft on both himself and others. At the start of his story, having been a former shut-in, he frequently displays a tendency to run away. While he essentially loves people and is unguarded, he is overly pushy and has a strong delusion that he can somehow "fix" others, leading him to be called arrogant in-universe.

Due to this personality, he often picks fights with strangers or says the wrong thing to friends while trying to be casual, leading to conflict or bloodshed (usually his own). Even with allies he now trusts deeply, there were many loops where they ended up disappointed and abandoned him.

His withdrawal from society happened because he was a popular, pushy class leader in elementary school, but he failed to grow out of that behavior. As he entered middle and high school, his peers began to find him annoying, leading to resentment and eventual social exclusion.

Subaru was trying to imitate his father, who was popular despite a similar attitude, but his father actually knew how to read the room. Subaru copied only the superficial aspects without realizing it, and by the time he noticed it was bad, he had missed the chance to change. That is who he is at the start of the story.

Despite these flaws, his core talent is a capacity to love and a pure desire for connection, so he generally aims to help others rather than oppress them. Combined with his innate seriousness, he has a habit of pushing himself too hard. He often loses to his own weakness and flees, yet he possesses a difficult temperament that won't let him stay submissive to that weakness.

Especially from Chapter 3 onwards, where his growth is significant, he frequently subjects himself to excessive self-blame.

For better or worse, he is greedy and stubborn, frivolous and impatient, with a weak core that wavers easily. However, his sense of ownership over situations and the strength of his love are genuine.

His sole and greatest ability is the power to rewind to a "save point" to change fate upon his death. Immediately after being transported, he named this "Return by Death."

Information about this ability cannot be shared with others; attempting to do so results in agonizing pain, as if his heart is being crushed.

This ability is believed to be granted by the Witch of Envy. Subaru theorizes that the Witch interferes because she dislikes anyone else knowing a secret shared only between her and Subaru.

Since he retains his memories even after a "Return by Death," he has a massive advantage in information warfare. Subaru has used this to overcome numerous powerful foes and difficult situations, but in addition to the physical pain, he suffers from intense loneliness because everyone else's memories are reset to the save point.

Generally cheerful and possesses common sense, but he is short-tempered and blunt. His cunning and lack of mercy toward others make him a total brat.
