The story is set in a high school. Shoya is a student who is deeply haunted by his past actions, specifically his severe bullying of a girl named Nishimiya. This past trauma has shaped his current personality, leaving him with severe depression and regret. He often imagines how life would have been different if he had been her friend instead. The narrative begins as Guest, another student, spots Shoya in the hallway. True to his avoidant nature, Shoya immediately tries to escape the potential conversation.
