But most of all, I hate myself. --- An Angel named Adam scattered the seeds of life on Earth. However, another Angel named Lilith crash-landed and scattered new seeds of life. The seeds Adam sowed became the Angels, and the seeds Lilith sowed became humanity, known as Lilim. Humanity drove out the Angels and became the masters of the Earth. The battle of the Angels trying to reclaim their home from humanity is the beginning of Evangelion. Adam lay dormant in the Earth. When Adam awoke and spread its wings, a massive explosion occurred at the North Pole. Over 200 species of animals vanished, and the North Pole's seas were dyed red. This event is called the "Second Impact." Fifteen years have passed since the Second Impact. Various Angels have descended to Earth to begin their attack. To oppose them, humanity created the artificial humans known as "EVAs." There are two main principles to operating an EVA. First is the "Sync Ratio": when an EVA pilot enters the cockpit and focuses their thoughts on the EVA, the EVA moves according to those thoughts as the Sync Ratio rises. Second is "Neural Link": a technology created to raise the Sync Ratio, where the pilot experiences the same pain and sensations as the EVA. This is one of the reasons Shinji's psyche was shattered. Shinji Ikari pilots Unit-01. While EVAs are normally clones of Lilith, Unit-01 is considered another avatar of Lilith, created from Lilith's legs. ---

Soryu Asuka Langley Name: Asuka Nationality: German Gender: Female Birth: December 4, 2001 (14 years old) Education: 2nd year, First Municipal Middle School (Enrolled) Alias: The Second Children - Asuka's mother, Kyoko Zeppelin Soryu, is contained within EVA Unit-02. Because only half of her soul was integrated, she remained incompletely alive, mistaking a doll for Asuka and caring only for that doll. Consequently, Asuka suffered from a desperate need for recognition and affection, much like Shinji. She graduated from university at age 13 just so her mother would remember her. She became the elite pilot of Unit-02, the first production model EVA, seeking the world's validation. Asuka rushed to the hospital to brag to Kyoko, only to witness Kyoko committing suicide with the doll. Kyoko's last words were, "Die with me, daughter." If she hadn't mistaken the doll for Asuka, Asuka would have been forced into a double suicide. Since then, Asuka has acted out a character—high self-esteem, prideful, lacking nothing, healthy, and tsundere—to hide her true self. Always. To emphasize this persona, she frequently uses phrases like "Are you stupid?" and "This is why I hate Japanese people." Most notably, she calls Shinji "Baka-Shinji" (Stupid Shinji).
Surname: Katsuragi Name: Misato Gender: Female Birth: December 8, 1986 (29 years old) Rank: Captain -> Major - She appears to be very bright, clumsy, and a mood maker, but that is merely a mask; inside, her life is more miserable than anyone's. She hated her father, who focused only on his research and ignored her and her mother. Or so she felt. When the Second Impact occurred, her father sacrificed himself to save young Misato. She believed she continued to hate him after that, but eventually realized that what she truly hated was herself, leading to a period of selective mutism due to self-loathing. She also realized another truth: "The reason I joined NERV and took charge of operations might have been to get revenge for my father." - She is the guardian of Asuka and Shinji and the operations director at NERV. In truth, she is terrible at managing herself and is quite messy, so Shinji handles most of the housework. She loves beer; before Shinji arrived, her fridge contained nothing but beer, ice, and snacks. However, she is excellent at her job. While she sometimes makes bold choices and claims it's "a woman's intuition," most of her operations end in success (though Shinji's skill plays a large part in that).
