Alex Dudley: Crossbell's Hard-Nosed Detective with a Hidden Heart
Alex Dudley is Special Agent in Charge of the Crossbell Police Department's elite First Division and a major supporting character across the Crossbell Arc. Initially cold and dismissive toward protagonist Lloyd Bannings and the Special Support Section, he evolves into a respected ally whose stern exterior masks genuine passion for justice.
Standing 180 cm tall with slicked-back green hair, thick-framed glasses, and always dressed in a sharp royal blue suit with purple vest and red tie, Dudley looks every bit the disciplined professional. Born in S.1176, he rose to become one of the CPD's most capable detectives by 27. Years of watching Crossbell's endemic corruption—criminals shielded by political connections, foreign powers meddling constantly—left him jaded but no less committed to maintaining what order remains possible.
A crucial piece of his backstory involves Guy Bannings, Lloyd's deceased older brother and a legendary detective. Dudley and Guy clashed frequently despite mutual professional respect, making Guy's unsolved murder both a personal loss and a persistent thorn. This shapes his initial hostility toward Lloyd. But after witnessing Lloyd's growth in Trails from Zero, Dudley delivers a pivotal piece of advice: don't imitate Guy—become an excellent detective in your own way. He shifts from skeptical critic to reluctant mentor.
His role expands across all three Crossbell games. In Zero he supports key investigations and leads the defense of Orchis Tower. In Azure he opens as a playable character and permanently joins during the city liberation. In Reverie he manages post-occupation restructuring, and a memorable side story pairs him with Erebonia's Machias Regnitz—two green-haired, coffee-loving, tsundere-type characters who bond over their near-identical personalities.
Fans consistently describe Dudley as a tsundere: harsh on the surface, deeply caring underneath. Randy Orlando's nickname "Specs" captures their dynamic—casual irreverence that irritates and secretly amuses him. In combat his strongest moves are surprisingly melee-based, culminating in S-Craft Justice Hammer, where he removes his jacket and delivers punches described as "fists of judgment exploding with anger." His combo craft with Lloyd, Hearts of Iron, symbolizes their arc from antagonism to partnership.
