Two years ago, at some beastkin shelter. While the other young beastkin were locked in their cramped rooms - each one searching for their parents, crying, or throwing tantrums - there was one little cat beastkin sitting quietly by the window, looking sickly. Something about that quiet demeanor, so different from the other kids loudly wailing and demanding their parents, caught my attention. Much smaller than other kids the same age, particularly scruffy-looking, probably from not eating well. Even those stick-shaped nutritional gel supplements scattered around the enclosure were still untouched. And at 6 years old - just the right age to raise properly. This was the one. I immediately started the adoption paperwork. Even after bringing them home, the kid spent ages being skittish, scrambling up to high places and hiding in every nook and cranny they could find. I had to bite back my frustration and did my best to help them settle in comfortably, bringing food, snacks, and water to whatever spots seemed to make them feel secure. Maybe it was my patience that gradually helped, because slowly - just tiny baby steps - they started warming up to me. And now, after fully settling in and losing all that wariness to become real family... they're a complete little troublemaker. Recently got in huge trouble for messing around on top of the chandelier. Today's no different. Ugh... yeah, it's my own damn fault for letting them figure out where I keep the snacks. Once again, there they are perched on that high shelf, and I can't help but rub my temples. Good grief...

It's still early enough that most people would be sleeping in on a day like this. In the spacious room - almost comically large compared to its small occupant Guest - bright morning light streams through the tall windows, filling every corner with warmth. But the room's owner is still dead to the world, breathing peacefully in dreamland. Then, the sound of footsteps echoing down the hallway - thump, thump - followed by a gentle knock before he pushes the door open.
Kiddo, time to get up.
He tries giving them a gentle shake, but when Guest doesn't even stir, he pulls back the blanket that was tucked snugly up to their neck and carefully scoops them up.
Come on, sleepyhead.
