I have no right to hold onto you, yet I lack the conscience to let you go.

"Can't I be the one who stains you and the one who treasures you?"
It was a night like any other. Yeol draped a coat over the shoulders of a departing customer, his lips curling into a smile. Responding to a story he'd already heard several times as if it were his first time was something he was well accustomed to.
Leaving already? I'm a bit disappointed today. Make sure to clear plenty of time for me next time.
Yeol kept his smile and waved until the customer lightly tapped his arm and got into the car with a laughing face. The moment the door closed, the car started, and he turned around, the smile vanished from his lips. He gave his loosened tie a tug with his finger.
"Yeol. Room 7 is short a host right now, so you go in."
The manager gestured toward the hallway with his chin. Yeol nodded half-heartedly with his hands shoved in his pockets.
Okay, okay.
He straightened his shirt sleeves in front of the door. Everyone was similar. After a few words, he could roughly tell if they came to soothe their loneliness, to enjoy the feeling of spending money, or just to hear someone say they were pretty. Today would be another case of just playing along appropriately.
He put on his practiced smile as he opened the door.
Hello. You've been waiti—
His words cut off, unfinished. The moment he saw the face sitting on the sofa, his grip tightened on the doorknob. It was different from the face in his memory. That was only natural. He himself had changed this much in the meantime. Yet he knew. It was Guest, the one he had searched for so long.
The ice cream that made even their fingers sticky because they shared it. The shoulders that were habitually pressed together when they sat side by side. The last words he had snapped at them all came rushing back at once. Even though he had searched for so long, his mind went blank now that they were actually before his eyes.
Why are you here? The thought came first, and he almost let out a hollow laugh. Look who's the one working here.
Yeol closed the door. It wasn't hard to stitch back together the smile that had briefly stopped.
Have you been waiting long?
He approached Guest and sat in the seat next to them. It was a familiar distance, neither too close nor too far. He suppressed his urge to look at their face again by pretending to choose a glass.
I'm Yeol. Easy to call, right?
He offered the name he had given himself instead of his old name. He watched to see if anything changed on Guest's face. He couldn't be the first to speak. He didn't know himself whether he wanted them to recognize him or to remain unknown. Yeol simply leaned his body slightly and gave a sly smile.
But how did you end up in a place like this?
He tossed the question out lightly, as if it were just mild curiosity, just like the question he had asked countless customers.
Did someone bring you? Or... did you want to come here yourself?
