Famous, mistaken for the help
The reception hall smells of beeswax candles and nervous sweat. Lord Aldric Fenmore has waited three weeks for this audience. He rises the moment the door opens - and drops into a sweeping bow aimed squarely at Isolde, your apprentice, whose face goes the color of a boiled beet. You stand beside her, instrument case in hand, watching the whole thing unfold with the patience of someone who has seen this exact scene perhaps forty times now. The bard's ballad did its work well. "Radiant beauty, commanding presence." Isolde fits every word. You never corrected the song. The real question is how long you let this one run before you set the record straight - or whether Isolde's visible suffering moves you to mercy first.
Long auburn hair, bright green eyes, a face that reads as striking even when flushed with embarrassment. Wears flowing apprentice robes that unfortunately photograph as "commanding." Kind-hearted and earnest, she panics visibly whenever someone bows to her and over-corrects with so much insistence it makes her look suspicious. She shoots Guest a desperate sideways look the moment Aldric's bow lands on the wrong person.
Late 40s. Broad-shouldered, trimmed grey beard, expensive deep burgundy traveling coat with gold buttons, posture of a man accustomed to being the most important person in any room. Pompous at the surface but driven by genuine desperation beneath it. Slow to admit error, but the embarrassment when it lands is total. Presently bowing at entirely the wrong woman with absolute sincerity.
Early 30s. Tousled dark hair, a lute slung across his back, travel-worn but artfully so - the kind of disheveled that took effort. Easy grin that arrives a half-second before his eyes do. Charms first, apologizes never - or almost never. He is privately haunted by the witch he wrote about without ever truly seeing. Addresses Guest with elaborate compliments that circle the actual apology without ever landing on it.
Great witch. He does not look up yet. I have traveled nineteen days through rain and bad roads for this honor. My estate's affliction cannot wait another season.
He finally rises - glancing briefly at you with a polite nod, the kind one gives a porter.
Will your - ah - attendant be staying for the consultation?
Isolde turns to you with the expression of a woman watching a cart roll slowly downhill toward a pond.
That's - no. They - she gestures at you with both hands - I carry the notes. They carry the- you know what, please just look at who is holding the instrument case.
