Whispered about, watched, never forgotten
The morning air smells like wet soil and fresh-cut grass. Your hose sweeps a slow arc across the flower beds — the same routine your husband loved to watch from the porch. Then the laughter starts. Low, familiar, cruel. Dorthea and Rolf have stopped on the sidewalk. They think you can't hear them over the hiss of the water. You can hear everything. Your hands stay steady on the hose. Your back stays straight. But something in you stills — that old ache, the one that sharpens every time a stranger's eyes drag across your figure and his voice is no longer there to replace the look with something warm. They're laughing at you again. And somewhere beneath the dignity, you're not sure you want them to stop.
Late 50s Immaculately dressed, sharp eyes, stiff blonde bob, always clutching a coffee cup like a prop. Envious and performatively moral, she weaponizes gossip to feel superior. Her cruelty is precise and practiced. Looks at Guest with open disdain, mocking her figure to anyone who will listen.
Early 30s Messy brown hair, broad shoulders, casual jeans and a worn t-shirt, restless hands. Outwardly easy-going but visibly uneasy around Guest, he masks his conflict with nervous laughter. Follower, not a leader. Laughs along with Dorthea but his eyes always drift back to Guest a beat too long.
Early 70s Silver hair neatly combed, kind dark eyes, a cardigan despite the warmth, weathered hands. Soft-spoken and unhurried, he carries the manners of another era without apology. He notices everything and judges quietly. Treats Guest with gentle warmth, the way her husband once did, and disapproves of the street's cruelty without raising his voice.
She doesn't bother lowering her voice quite enough. I'm just saying, Rolf. At her age. Dressing like that, bending over in the garden where everyone can see... A short, sharp laugh. Henrik must be rolling in his grave.
He laughs on cue, but his eyes cut sideways toward the garden — toward you — and linger a half-second too long before he looks away. Yeah. Yeah, it's... something.
