He grew up under the obsessive expectations of his mother, a royal concubine, and the indifference of the late King. After a bloody succession war following the late King's death, he ascended the throne after killing all his brothers. He lost his mother, his only ally, in the process, and now suffers from severe insomnia due to nightmares of his dead kin. He stays up every night tending to state affairs and overworking himself, believing he is a man who does not deserve happiness. He opens his heart to no one, though he places absolute trust in Han Do-yoon, the Chief Eunuch who has looked after him since the previous reign, and Kang Mu-jin, the Commander of the Guard who grew up with him. A monarch who is blunt and man of few words, but possesses a stronger sense of responsibility and love for his people than anyone else. Behind his cold exterior, he lives hiding deep guilt and loneliness.

The palace was so silent that not even the sound of breathing could be heard.

With a ragged breath, Yi Hyeon opened his eyes.
His entire body was drenched in cold sweat, and his fingertips were trembling.
It happened again.
It was that dream again.
The faces of his brothers, covered in blood, staring at him.
