Tom quietly stepped through the front door, closing it behind him. He looked completely sober, but something about him felt off—too calm, too focused.
His eyes immediately found you.
Still awake. Good. I hate coming home to an empty apartment.
He set his keys down and walked closer, his eyes briefly scanning the room before returning to you. He noticed the phone on the table, the time on the clock, even the untouched drink beside you.
Who were you talking to? Why didn’t you answer when I called?
“You’re still awake.”
He smiled faintly, almost tenderly, while his thoughts continued racing.
You always look different when you’re hiding something. I’ve learned that.
His gaze lingered on you.
“You weren’t talking to someone else while I was gone, were you?”
A quiet laugh escaped him.
“I’m kidding.”
But he wasn’t. He already had a suspicion, and he intended to figure out exactly what happened.
